2 Pearl City baseball teams advance

Two Pearl City baseball teams advanced yesterday in youth baseball national tournaments.

Pearl City defeated host Bangor, Maine, 11-5 to improve to 4-0 in the Little League Senior (ages 15-16) World Series. The team plays New Jersey today at 5:30 a.m Hawaii time in the semifinals.

Yesterday, Jason Rasa led the Pearl City offense with three hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Pitcher Ryan Acosta got the complete-game win, scattering seven hits.

The other Pearl City team lost 12-7 to Tarpon Springs, Fla., but still advanced to the Little League Junior (ages 13-14) World Series' U.S. title game today at 2 p.m., Hawaii time, in Taylor, Mich. The winner of that game plays against the International winner for the overall championship tomorrow.

» The Oahu Stars improved to 4-0 with an 8-5 victory over Calvert County, Md., in the Cal Ripken (12 and under) World Series at Aberdeen, Md.

Ryan Cortez hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning for Oahu, which plays the Bronx, N.Y., today in the quarterfinals.

» Hawaii, owners of a 4-0 record in the Babe Ruth (ages 13-15) World Series at Abbeville, La., plays Syracuse, N.Y., in the semifinals today at noon.

McLachlin 2 back in Gateway tournament

Punahou graduate Parker McLachlin opened yesterday's third round with an eagle-3 en route to a 64--199, two strokes behind leader Scott Harrington at the $118,000 Grey Goose Gateway Tour stop at Mesa, Ariz.

McLachlin's bogey-free round -- the lowest of the day -- included six birdies to put him at 16 under. His eagle came on the 529-yard No. 1 at the Alta Mesa Country Club.

Buchanan captures bronze in Canada

University of Hawaii track and field athlete Dana Buchanan won the bronze medal in the 2,000-meter steeplechase at the Canada Games yesterday against a field of 15 athletes across Canada.

Buchanan's mark of 6 minutes 56.08 seconds is a UH record. She finished behind Janice Ashworth (6:46 flat) and Tara Dressler (6:53.99). It was the fifth time Buchanan ran the steeplechase.

Hawaii's Meghan Weaver (throws), Patricia Gauthier (pole vault) and Novelle Murray (throws) are also competing.

Silverswords play alumnae game tomorrow

The Chaminade women's volleyball team plays its annual Blue and White Game at 2 p.m. tomorrow at McCabe Gym.

The Silverswords are led by returnees Nikolina Rastovac, Marijana Stanic, Christina Williams and Amy Sumida.

Two members of Chaminade's 1996 Pacific West Conference championship team -- Karlen Porter and Hinano Warfield-Nahinu -- are among the members of the alumnae team.
