Lajola still unbeaten at USTA nationals

Top seed Dennis Lajola of Aiea beat Dennis Nevolo of Gurnee, Ill., 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals of the USTA boys National Championships at Kalamazoo, Mich., yesterday.

The match was continued from Thursday, when it was suspended because of rain with Lajola leading the third set 1-0. Lajola takes on third-seeded Steven Forman of Del Mar, Calif., in today's semifinal.

Lajola already knows what it's like to send Forman packing, as he teamed with Nate Schnugg to sweep Forman and Steve Johnson 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinal round of the doubles tournament.

Lajola and Schnugg take on Johnny Hamui and Tyler Hochwalt for the championship today.

Lambert advances to men's semifinals

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly and Punahou product Mike Lambert came from behind to advance to the men's semifinals of the AVP Nissan Championship Huntington Beach Open yesterday.

Kiraly and Lambert beat Jake Gibb and Stein Metzger, also of Punahou, 17-21, 21-18, 19-17.

Beauchan qualifies for Olympic trials

Brittany Beauchan of the Hawaii Swim Club finished fourth in the 100-meter breastroke in 1:12.28 in yesterday's Swimming Junior National Championships at Irvine, Calif. She qualified for the 2008 Olympic Trials.

Randall Tom of Maui came in sixth place in the 100 fly with a time of 56.25.

Takemoto rallies Hawaii in American Legion

Darren Takemoto hit a single down the right-field line to bring in Kaohi Downing for the win as Hawaii beat California in an American Legion tournament at Las Vegas yesterday.

Randy Kitagawa scored on a wild pitch to tie the game for Hawaii. Kaohi Downing earned his third win of the year.

Hittle sprains ankle in practice

Reigning Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Tara Hittle sprained her ankle at practice last night.

Hittle, a 6-foot sophomore hitter for the No. 4 University of Hawaii women's volleyball team, landed on a teammate's foot during practice. Practice ended after that and Hittle was carried out of the gym.
