Jazz piano

Piano teachers are invited to a workshop with Willie Myette, executive director of JazzKids, a Rhode Island program that teaches jazz and improvisation to students as young as age 6.

Myette's session will be at 10 a.m. Friday at ABC Music Store, 461 Cooke St. Cost is $8. Call 593-2575

Tribute to a king

The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center pays tribute to King Kamehameha III in a program of Hawaiian music and dance, 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Fountain Courtyard Stage.

Ku'uipo Kumukahi and Halau Hawai'i will perform as part of the hotel's Monarchy Series.

A display of pictures from the king's life will be on display through the day.

Kamehameha III had the longest reign of Hawaii's rulers -- 30 years -- and was responsible for the Great Mahele and the Declaration of Religious rights.

Vegetarians in history

Historian Rynn Berry talks about famous vegetarians -- from the Buddha and Pythagoras to Paul McCartney and Lisa Simpson -- at 7 tonight at the Ala Wai Golf Course clubhouse.

Berry is the guest speaker at the August meeting of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii. He is an adviser to the North American Vegetarian Society, based on his study of vegetarianism from a historical perspective.

Berry's books include "Famous Vegetarians and Their Favorite Recipes" and "Food for the Gods: Vegetarianism and the World's Religions."

His lecture is free. Call 722-2557.
