» Toronto closer Miguel Batista threw some high praise at Saint Louis product Brandon League this week, telling the Jays' official Web site that he expects League to step into his role someday despite League's rough adjustment to the big leagues.
"I believe that (League) -- when he finds his way in the big leagues -- is going to be a guy that abuses people," Batista said. "It takes some time. He's young and he needs to learn. Up here, you don't get away with many mistakes."
» Shane Victorino (St. Anthony) was named the International League's player of the week for his performance between July 25 and 31. The center fielder had four games with three hits in the stretch in the leadoff spot for the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Red Barons.
Victorino leads the league with 73 runs scored this year and is third in triples with eight.
» Chad Santos (Saint Louis) is hitting .160 (4-for-25) over his last eight games after hitting .306 (15-for-49) over his previous 12 contests. Santos and Chris Truby (Damien) have combined to drive in 19 percent of the runs the Omaha Royals have scored this year.
» Rodney Choy Foo (Kailua) drove in a pair of runs without an official at-bat Thursday, hitting a pair of sacrifice flies and drawing two walks in a 3-2 loss to Lynchburg.
» Justin Hall (St. Anthony) broke a franchise record for the St. Paul Saints by reeling off nine consecutive hits last week and reaching base in 13 straight at-bats. Hall then went hitless in his next eight at-bats.
» Brian Finegan (Hawaii) and Tim Montgomery (Hawaii) are first and second in batting average for the Lake County Captains by a wide margin. Finegan leads the team with a .295 mark and Montgomery is second at .276. The next-highest batting average on the team is .249.
