Chef Yamaguchi
gets good play
in upscale magazine

So there was restaurateur-chef Roy Yamaguchi's smiling face on not just one but two pages in the very upscale Town & Country magazine this month. Roy's quarter-page photo is on the table of contents page and an even bigger display of the same picture is in the On The Town section. Alan Wong's restaurant is listed as Roy's favorite spot for a special occasion. Besides praising his friend Alan in the short story, Roy calls Side Street Inn his favorite neighborhood hangout, the Halekulani's House Without a Key his favorite pau hana meeting spot and Waikiki Beach between the Royal Hawaiian and the Halekulani hotels as his favorite place for people-watching ...

Alan Wong's pupu, isle-style desserts, entertainment and a live auction will be offered at the annual Taste of Kick Start Karate fund-raiser Sept. 4 at the Bayer Estate from 4 to 8 p.m. Former Police Chief Lee Donohue and Amy Abe, a retired educator from Waipahu High, founded Kick Start in 1995. Its goal is putting and keeping at-risk youths on the right path. Some 500 youngsters have attended Kick Start and most earned a 3.0 GPA or better in school. Many have gone on to college. All of the teachers, counselors and social workers involved with Kick Start provide their services free. Kick Start also awards scholarships. Glenn and Judy Medeiros filmed for U.K. show

Glenn Medeiros and his wife, Judy, were recently filmed on the Moana's Banyan Veranda by producers from VH1 UK. They will be shown on "Mrs. Popstar," a new series in England ... Mahi Beamer will talk about the CD re-release of his 1962 LP album, "Hawaii's Remarkable Voice," Sunday on Harry Soria's "Territorial Airwaves" show. The program is carried from 5 to 6 p.m. on Hawaiian kine fm, 105.1 on the radio dial ... "Happy Birthday" was sung in fine eight-part harmony to Marita Nelson by her Opera Chorus sisters last week at Compadres. Singing were Patricia Bushong, Pam Eliashof, Chris Eilers, Sister Grace Capellas, Lorna Mount, Norma Wright, Betsy McCreary and Dorothy Ogan ...
