A touch of vanilla

art

Flavored coffees and teas are all the rage, so why not flavored sugar? Place one Madagascar vanilla bean in a pound of Maui sugar, let it age and the result is an aromatic vanilla sugar.

This new product is actually a take on a very old one. Vanilla-bean-flavored sugar was common before the creation of vanilla extract. Hula Girl vanilla bean sugar is a raw, unwashed sugar infused with imported vanilla. It can be used to sweeten coffee or tea, sprinkled over cereal, or to make French toast, sugar cookies, ice creams or puddings and custards.

The sugar sells for $7 to $8 for a pound at specialty stores such as Compleat Kitchen, Bad Ass Coffee Co. and Executive Chef. Or order via www.hulagirlthestore.com.
