Team Hawaii wins zone championship

Team Hawaii defeated Northern California in the finals of the USTA National 16-and-under Zonal Championships in Salt Lake City. It's the first time a Hawaii team has won a USTA zonal event.

Colin Fujishige and Kevin Tamura won their boys matches and Janelle Arita, Kristen Lim and Sara Yoshinaga picked up girls wins to force a 5-5 tie. Hawaii won the tiebreaker based on the number of sets won (48-47).

Other members of the Hawaii team were Skyler Tateishi, Keven Wong, Matthew Tavares, Brooke Doane and Christie Pagatpatan. Team Hawaii was coached by Leilani Magee of Maui.

Hawaii girls eighth in America's Cup

Christine Kim carded a three-round total of 227 to lead a team of Hawaii golfers to an eighth-place finish in the Girls Junior America's Cup, which concluded Thursday in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Hawaii's four-member team posted a total of 702, 31 strokes behind first-place Mexico. Kim's score was good for 11th place in the individual standings. Miki Ueoka (233) was 20th and Kristina Merkle (245) finished 38th. Britney Choy withdrew.

Mililani Pony 13s win again in World Series

Mililani scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to edge Tamiami Fla., 6-5 on Saturday and improve to 2-0 in the Pony 13 World Series in Chino Hills, Calif.

Ryan Muraoka singled home Keanu Carmichael with the go-ahead run in the seventh to put Mililani a win away from winning its pool and qualifying for today's championship game.

Babe Ruth team rolls: Paul Sneider drove in three runs as Hawaii defeated Central California 14-4 in the Babe Ruth Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament in Taylorsville, Utah.

Hawaii has outscored its opponents 42-11 in its three tournament wins.

Metzger, Gibb lose in volleyball final

Punahou graduate Stein Metzger and partner Jake Gibb were swept by Switzerland's Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel 21-14, 21-16 in the championship match of the Beach Volley Paris Ile de France yesterday.

Heuscher and Kobel, the Olympic bronze medalists in Athens, needed 41 minutes to claim the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour gold medal and the $41,500 first prize. Metzger and Gibb split $27,000 for finishing second.
