Forgiveness the topic of Aug. 7 observance

People who have demonstrated the power of forgiveness in their lives will be honored Aug. 7 at the third annual Hawaii International Forgiveness Day observance.

The program sponsored by the Hawaii Forgiveness Project will also include performances by the Iona Contemporary Dance Theatre and Na Hoahanau, and presentation of poetry and art depicting the concept of forgiveness.

The event from 2 to 5 p.m. at Central Union Church parish hall, 1660 S. Beretania St., is open to the public.

David Keith of Dumfries, Scotland, will speak about recent terrorist events in Great Britain and their meaning for the future. Margarete Birmingham will demonstrate the practical peacemaking techniques of the Unipaz Brazil project. Local authors Wally Amos, Jerry Jampolsky and Diane Cirincione will also speak.

The 60th anniversary of the dropping of atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, will be observed.

Mililani Buddhists host open house

A Mililani Buddhist congregation will offer a sampler of its educational, spiritual, community service and character-building activities at its Aug. 13 "Welcome Wagon Mililani Mauka Residents."

Demonstrations by aikido and judo students and a lesson in the unique line-dancing style of the bon dance will be featured at the open house from 10 a.m. to noon at Mililani Iki Elementary School, 95-1330 Lehiwa Drive. Members of Mililani Hongwanji Temple will also share information about ikebana (flower arranging) class, mindfulness meditation training, youth camp and student exchange programs and the child care service offered before and after summer school.

The temple's annual bon dance will be held the evenings of Aug. 19 and 20 at 95-257 Kaloapau St., next to Recreation Center III. The public is welcome.

Churches to hold rummage sales

Two Honolulu congregations will continue the tradition of recycling usable possessions at fund-raising sales next month.

» The Community of Christ Church at 2319 Rose St. will sell clothing, household goods and white-elephant items at its Aug. 6 bazaar. The congregation will also sell food for the browsers during the sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with shoyu chicken plate lunch, saimin, sushi, Spam musubi, hot dogs and andagi on the menu, as well as a bake sale booth. Parking is available at Linapuni Elementary School. Proceeds will benefit the Lanakila Meals on Wheels program, church and community programs.

» Harris United Methodist Church, 20 S. Vineyard Boulevard, will sponsor its annual Rummage Sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 13. Traditionally one of the largest church sales on Oahu, it will offer clothing, kitchenware, toys, books and white-elephant items. It will benefit mission projects of the United Methodist Women.
