Murakami at Rainbow baseball alumni reunion

Retired baseball coach Les Murakami will be the guest of honor at tomorrow's Rainbow Baseball Alumni Reunion at the Hale Koa Hotel.

The event is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to all former players and their families.

The cost is $50. For information, call 247-5771.

» The Oahu Cal Ripken Baseball League's organizational fall league meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Halawa District Park Gym.

The league is seeking teams in the 9-10 and 11-12 year-old age groups for the fall season, which runs from Oct. 1-Dec. 11.

» Deadline for entries into the Triple Crown Select Baseball Series is Aug. 26.

The organization is seeking teams in 9-, 10-, 11-, 12-, 13-, 14- and 16-under age groups or play Sept. 2-5 at Central Oahu Regional Park. Divisions are limited to six teams with a four-game guarantee.

Championship teams qualify for various tournaments on the mainland.

Kim 4th at Betsy Rawls girls golf

Kimberly Kim of Pahoa shot a final-round 76--221 to finish fourth yesterday at the McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls' Championships at Malvern, Pa.

Kim was 14 strokes behind winner Morgan Pressel (207). Esther Choe of Arizona was second (218) and Georgia's Joy Kim third (220).

Stephanie Kono of Honolulu finished alone in 19th place at 76--230 while Pearl City's Mari Chun (82--236) shared 32nd place with two others.

» Hilo's Jacob Low tied for second to help Team Hawaii to a third-place finish and bronze medal of the Junior Boys America's Cup yesterday at Sheridan, Wyo.

Hawaii's aggregate total was 650 for the 54 holes, six strokes behind co-winners Washington and Oregon. Southern California finished second at 646.

Low carded a 68--211 to share runner-up honors. Also on the Hawaii team were Sean Maekawa of Paauilo (220), Tadd Fujikawa of Honolulu (224) and Pukalani's Thomas Robertson (235).

5 female surfers advance at U.S Open

Hawaii's Carissa Moore, Melanie Bartels, Megan Abubo, Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly all won their heats to advance through the round of 48 at the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach, Calif.

The only female surfer not to win her heat and advance to today's Round of 24 was Alana Blanchard, who placed fourth in her heat, tying for 19th.

In the morning's small surf, six male surfers from Hawaii -- led by heat winners Nathan Carroll, Freddy Patacchia Jr. and Joel Centeiro -- advanced to today's Round of 48. Also advancing with second-place finishes in their respective heats were Andy Irons, Kalani Robbs, Dustin Cuizon and Gavin Gillette.

Eliminated yesterday after finishing third in their respective heats were Cheyne Magnusson, Jesse Merle-Jones and Ola Eleogram. Finishing fourth were Derek Ho, Mikala Jones, Roy Powers, Kekoa Bacalso and Pancho Sullivan.

Bown to appear at speed camp

Former Hawaii volleyball player Heather Bown will appear at the Speed and Quickness Camp at Cook Field this weekend.

The camp runs tomorrow and Sunday with athletes under 13 working out at 8:30 a.m. and older athletes hitting the field at 10:30. A professional combine will be administered on both days, including a 40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump and pro agility shuttle.
