Foundation honors Hawaii student-athletes

The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation honored 30 Hawaii scholar-athletes yesterday by presenting them college scholarships for the 2005-06 school year.

The foundation awarded $38,500 in scholarships.

"We're thrilled to help this wonderful group of young people from Hawaii continue with their education.," foundation president Ernest Moore said. "They have proven themselves by excelling both academically and athletically and we're proud to offer our support."

Rudich takes first-round lead at Waialae

Marcie Rudich took a slim lead over Sanae Vierra after the first round of the 49th annual Waialae Women's Invitational yesterday at Waialae Country Club.

Rudich shot a 5-over 77 for a 1-shot lead over Vierra. Mia Hew carded a 79, good for third place.

3 Rainbow Wahine athletes earn medals

Tasha Monroe won the bronze medal in the 400-meter run at the Canadian Senior National Track and Field Championship last weekend.

Monroe, who just completed her University of Hawaii career, finished in 54.64 seconds. She qualified for the World French Games to be held in Niger in December.

UH sophomore Megan Weaver won the bronze with a throw of 46 feet, 334 inches in shot put, and senior Novelle Murray earned bronze in the discus with a heave of 160-1134.

Eldredge baseball clinic at Punahou

The third annual Eldredge Athletics Baseball Clinic is Saturday, Aug. 6, at Punahou School's baseball complex.

The clinic, for ages 8-15, runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the cost is $65. For more information, call Sue Eldredge at 681-5681 or 429-5429.

Aloha State karate championships in August

The 23rd annual Aloha State Traditional Karate Championships are Aug. 7 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Aliamanu Military Reservation.

The entry fees range from $15 to $20 per event.
