Police hold 2 suspects in Big Island shooting

Big Island police arrested two men and a woman Sunday on suspicion of first-degree assault in the shooting of a 50-year-old man at his Volcano home Saturday morning.

Police arrested two men, ages 27 and 28, and a 51-year-old woman, all of Pahoa, on Sunday.

Puna patrol officers discovered the victim at his Mauna Loa Estates subdivision home conscious but weakened with multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

The man was taken to Hilo Medical Center and later flown to the Queen's Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition, police said.

The suspects were being held in the Hilo police cellblock pending further investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Richard Sherlock at 961-2379 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Driver runs stop sign, dies in collision in Hilo

A 75-year-old woman died Saturday after a two-vehicle collision in the Sunrise Ridge subdivision of Hilo.

Police said Yasuku Tatsuno of Hilo was driving her 1989 Toyota four-door sedan south on Kukuau Street when she ran a stop sign and collided with a 1998 Dodge pickup truck traveling west on Mohouli Street. The impact knocked over the truck. The truck driver, Michael Ignacio, 59, and his 17-year-old son were taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

Tatsuno and an 81-year-old female passenger in the Toyota were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Tatsuno later died.

Police said it was not known if Tatsuno was wearing her seat belt, though it appears that all the other victims were wearing theirs. Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in this crash.
