Team Japan rallies past Team USA Hawaii

Yuichi Tomizawa's third touchdown pass of the game lifted Team Japan to a 20-16 win over Team USA Hawaii in the Japan-USA Bowl yesterday in Tokyo.

Tomizawa connected with Takao Mizuguchi on a 25-yard scoring pass with 1:32 left in the game to rally the Japan all-stars past the team of former college and professional players from Hawaii at the Tokyo Dome.

Team USA Hawaii quarterback Fred Salanoa completed 12 of 17 passes for 127 yards before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with a sprained right knee. Chad Kapanui connected on four of seven passes for 43 yards and a touchdown. Receiver Britton Komine caught seven passes for 80 yards and running back John West ran for 55 yards and a score.

Team USA Hawaii struck first when Leroy Shelton took a screen pass from Kapanui and raced 27 yards for a touchdown with 9:40 left in the second quarter. After Team Japan tied the game on Tomizawa's first TD pass, Komine took the ensuing kickoff 76 yards to set up a field goal by Ben Villaflor with 5:47 left in the first half.

Japan took a 13-10 lead into halftime, but West scored on a 4-yard run with 4:11 left in the third quarter to reclaim the lead.

Team USA Hawaii was able to maintain its lead until Japan took possession on its own 10 with 3:48 left in the game and drove 90 yards for the winning score.

Maui Invitational bracket set

A matchup between college basketball powers Arizona and Kansas highlights the opening round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational in November.

Arizona, which reached the Elite Eight of last season's NCAA Tournament, meets the Jayhawks in the first round on Nov. 21 at the Lahaina Civic Center.

The tournament, which includes six former national champions, opens with host Chaminade facing Michigan State. MSU reached the Final Four in March and plays Hawaii at the Stan Sheriff Center two days prior to taking on the Silverswords on Maui.

The other first-round games feature Gonzaga playing Maryland and Connecticut facing Arkansas.

The finals are Nov. 23. All of the games will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.

Second wave of Transpac fleet gets under way

Twenty Division III and IV boats in the Centennial Transpacific Yacht Race get under way today, the second of three starts for the 2,225-nautical mile Los Angeles-to-Honolulu event.

Overall leaders in the first pack of boats that started Monday are B'Quest and the historic Odyssey.

B'Quest, crewed by sailors with disabilities, logged 192 miles at an average speed of 8 knots and was 1,877 miles from the Diamond Head finish as of yesterday's roll call.

Sailing in the Aloha Class A, the Odyssey -- which sailed in the 1939 event -- shares the overall lead after doing 207 miles.

Sally Honey's Illusion took over the Cal 40 lead from David Pillsbury's Ralphie.

The last of the fleet, 20 Class I and II boats, set sail Sunday.

Hawaii players garner honors at JOs

Four players from ASICS Rainbows Hawaii Volleyball Club were named to their respective all-tournament teams at the recently completed USA Volleyball Boys Junior Olympics.

Va'afuti Tavana was named to the 18s club all-tournament team, despite ASICS finishing ninth overall. Treston Yasso and Napua Canda from Pilipa'a of Hilo, which finished third, also made the 18s club team.

ASICS 17s had three players selected to the all-tournament team -- Kaleo Baxter, Charles Bell and Nick Castello. The team finished second in the club division.

25th Tinman Triathlon on Sunday

A field of about 800 athletes will compete in the 25th Tinman Triathlon on Sunday.

The event begins at 5:45 a.m. with a 750-meter swim at Queen's Beach before a 40-kilometer bike ride from Kapiolani Park to Hawaii Kai and back.

The race ends with a 10K run around Diamond Head and through Kahala before finishing back at Kapiolani Park.
