TEMARI
Grant Kagimoto's "Lucky Nake'u Cat" and Paulette Kahalepuna's feathery lei are two of the creations resulting from "Nake'u's Challenge," that will be part of TEMARI's "Art & Soul" fund-raiser Saturday.

'Art & Soul'

Designer Nake'u Awai will be honored during TEMARI, the Center for Asian and Pacific Arts', presentation of its annual "Art & Soul" fund-raiser 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii Manoa Grand Ballroom.

Dubbed "Nake'u's Cabaret," the event will feature food and drinks presented in cabaret style, plus a silent auction of ceramics, fabric, jewelry, prints and artwork. Included among the auction items donated by TEMARI's faculty and supporting artists is a plantation-era cedar storage chest on wheels.

The highlight will be "Nake'u's Challenge," in which 30 artists will create works inspired by Awai's Hawaii-inspired work. Every artist received a bagful of Nake'u Awai fabric remnants that were sewn, rolled into beads and otherwise transformed. The finished creations will be auctioned on site.

Tickets are $35, of which $15 is tax-deductible. Call 536-4566.
