Jones golf tourney raises $25,000 for charity

The June Jones Foundation QB Golf Classic raised $25,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii.

The money, which RMHC received last week, will be used to help neighbor island families with ill children.

The tournament was held in June at the Big Island's Hokuli'a course.

"I can't thank my many friends enough who have agreed to step forward with me in helping these children and their families," said Jones, the head coach of the University of Hawaii football team. "Life is about giving and I feel so blessed to have been put in this position with my life to attempt to make a difference in the lives of these families."

Perry wins Aloha Section PGA senior title

First-round leader Harold Perry shot a 1-over 73 for a two-day total of 3-under 141 to win the Aloha Section PGA Senior Championship yesterday on the North Course at Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island.

Perry earned a spot in the National Senior Club Professional Championship event, Oct. 20-23 in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Four others also qualified for the national tournament, Mike Iyoki, Dennis Rose, Rich Fite and Ron Kiaaina.

Walsh earns wild-card spot at Jeffreys Bay

Kauai's Ian Walsh won a wild-card slot into the Billabong Pro surf contest at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa yesterday.

Walsh qualified for the Association of Surfing Professionals' World Championship Tour main event along with three other surfers at yesterday's trials.

Fellow Hawaii surfers Bruce Irons, Fred Patacchia Jr., Kalani Robb and reigning three-time world champion Andy Irons are also competing in the main event, which is expected to start today.

Huang grabs 2 Aloha State Games titles

University of Hawaii diver QiongJie Huang won the 1-meter and 3-meter titles in the senior women's open division of the Aloha State Games at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on Saturday.

Huang is the collegiate national champion in the 1-meter springboard. She won Saturday's 1-meter event with a score of 275.65 and followed it up with 532.05 in the 3-meter competition.

UH's Rui Wang placed second in both divisions, and teammate Miranda Maas took third place in 1-meter dive.

7 isle teams undefeated at volleyball JOs

Seven of the 10 Hawaii teams competing at the USA Volleyball Boys Junior Olympic Tournament are undefeated in their respective divisions in Louisville, Ky.

Outrigger Canoe Club hasn't dropped a set in going 6-0 in the 17s open division. ASICS Rainbows are 5-0 in the 17s club division.

Two Hawaii teams are unbeaten in the 14-and-under club division: Ku'ikahi at 4-0 and ASICS Rainbows at 3-0. Also undefeated are Ku'ikahi (15s club) 4-0, Outrigger (14s open) 3-0 and ASICS Rainbows (12s club) 4-0.

Other entered are: Side Out (17s club) 3-4, 'Onipa'a (17s club) 2-5 and 'Onipa'a (14s club) 2-2.

Competition continues through tomorrow.
