2 men charged
with forging IDs

Police find many counterfeit cards
and the equipment to produce them

Two men caught at a Waikiki hotel with fake IDs were charged yesterday with producing false identification documents and possessing a document-making implement.

Travis J. Riley and Nicholas M. Shake were charged by complaint filed in federal court.

FBI Special Agent Jeff Pfeiffer said in an affidavit that police went to check out a missing-person report at a room in the Marine Surf Waikiki Hotel. Shake was in the room, and police said he produced false identification.

Riley, who rented the hotel room, consented to a search of the premises, and police found numerous counterfeit ID cards and blank checks.

FBI agents also responded and found about 20 false ID cards at "different stages of manufacture," the complaint said.

The false identification cards included those that could only be lawfully produced in California, Nevada and South Carolina.

Agents also found equipment and supplies used to make fake ID cards, including a computer, a printer, a paper cutter, heavy paper and clear plastic sheets.

The finished cards looked like real identification cards issued by various state governments, the complaint said.

Shake told agents Riley hired him to do computer work for his business, and admitted to using the computer and producing the ID cards at Riley's request.

Shake also admitted using the ID cards to get into clubs and get alcohol, the complaint said.

Shake told FBI agents Riley collected others' personal information.

A female who accompanied Shake told FBI agents that Riley had Shake produce the ID cards and that Riley would use the cards to open bank accounts, the complaint said. The agents also searched Riley's personal property and vehicle and recovered more false IDs and a laminator.
