Speed and Quickness clinics continue

The final series of Hawaii Speed and Quickness clinics for the year begins this weekend on the University of Hawaii campus.

Two sessions, run by UH football coaches Rich Miano and Mel deLaura, will be held each Saturday and Sunday this month. The session for youths ages 7-12 runs from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. The session for those ages 13 and older runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Registration takes place 30 minutes before the start of the clinics at the UH athletic complex. The fee is $10.

English in Vegas Summer League

Former Hawaii basketball standout Carl English is playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Reebok Vegas Summer League which opened yesterday.

The Cavaliers tip off their six-game schedule today against New Orleans at Cox Pavilion on the UNLV campus. The 16-team league runs through July 15.

English played in the National Basketball Development League the last two seasons and is among the rookies and free agents hoping to make an impression with the Cavs this summer. He participated in a free-agent camp with the Milwaukee Bucks last month.

Asics Rainbows 15s win gold in Salt Lake

Asics Rainbows Hawaii, led by tournament MVP Leinani Keanini, defeated Front Range to win the 15s Club National division at the Junior Olympic Girls Volleyball Championships Sunday in Salt Lake City.

The Hawaii team defeated the Colorado team 25-23, 25-15 at the Salt Palace. Asics won on percentage points to avoid a playoff to get into the gold bracket then reeled off four consecutive victories to take the title, finishing with a 10-1 record.

Named to the all-tournament team were middle blocker Samantha Misa (Iolani), hitter Haililani Pokipala (Sacred Hearts) and hitter Keanini (Iolani). Other members are Emily Fukunaga (Punahou), Risa-Marie Ka'awa (Iolani), Anuhea Keanini (Punahou), Mika Nakashige (Punahou), Miyoko Pettit (Iolani), Kahala Rowe (Kamehameha), Tatiana Santiago (Kamehameha), Emma Wo (Punahou) and Sydney Yogi (Punahou). The coaches are Luis Ramirez and Lehua Enomoto.

Also medaling were the Maunalani 12s, which finished 9-2 in placing third third.

In non-medal brackets, the Oahu Volleyball Club's 18s were 29th and Big Island Volleyball Association's 18s were 40th in the National division.The Jammers 17s finished 2nd in the silver bracket, 10th overall in the national division.

Also, Quicksets 17 tied for fifth in the American division; Maunalani 16s tied for fifth in the Open division; Oahu VC 16s were 15th in the National; Jammers 15s were 15th in Open; and Maunalani 13s finished 22nd in the National.

UH's Kajihara tours with NCAA All-Stars

Rainbow Wahine golfer Lisa Kajihara is one of 10 collegiate players making a summer tour through Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and mainland China as the NCAA All-Stars.

Kajihara, a two-time Maui Interscholastic League champion at King Kekaulike, redshirted at Hawaii last season after playing at Portland State as a freshman.

The All-Stars will play a total of 18 tournaments throughout Asia.

Maui's Madrid added to Mayhem card

Maui's Kili Madrid (6-0-1, 3 KO's) has been added to the card for the Oct. 8 Mayhem on Maui pro boxing show.

Madrid, a 1996 Baldwin product who had been pursuing his professional career on the mainland, will fight Oregon's Paul Mpendo in a six-round semi main event at the Lahaina Civic Center.

The main event is for the WBC Continental Americas Welterweight title. Defending champion Vince Phillips will fight former WBF International Welterweight champion Reynaldo Pelonia.

Gee, Ito scholarships awarded to 2 seniors

McKinley graduate Christopher Kobayashi and Keaau graduate Sarah Sheffield were awarded the 2004-05 Bill Gee and Monte Ito Scholarships.

The awards celebrate the careers of the two late sportswriters. Gee was a longtime writer and editor at the Star-Bulletin. Ito covered sports for The Honolulu Advertiser. Both men are in the Hawaii Golf Hall of Fame.

Sheffield, who played golf at Gonzaga last season as a freshman, is now a two-time winner of the scholarship.

Kobayashi was captain of his McKinley team and is a junior at Northern Colorado.

The $1,500 college scholarships are for "outstanding achievements and/or potential in journalism and a sincere appreciation of golf." The awards are sponsored by the Star-Bulletin and Advertiser and administered by the David S. Ishii Foundation.

HSJGA 11-12, 10-under champs crowned: Cyd Okino and Lorens Chan won Hawaii State Junior Golf Association girls and boys state championships in the 11-12 age division yesterday at the Hawaii Prince Golf Club.

Kacie Komoto won the 10-under girls title, while Skye Inakoshi beat John Oda in a playoff for the boys championship.
