"Fantastic Four": Marvel Comics' first family of superheroes comes to the big screen. The crime-fighting team has long been a favorite of comics fans, but now America's filmgoing public will finally meet Reed Richards, wife Sue Storm, her brother Johnny and good friend Ben Grimm as they do battle with Dr. Doom in their guises as the elongated Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the monstrous Thing. Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis and Julian McMahon star. (PG-13)

"Dark Water": This is yet another American remake of a hit Japanese movie, this time from "Ringu" creator Hideo Nakata. Jennifer Connelly plays a recently separated mother who moves into a spooky New York apartment with her 5-year-old daughter (Ariel Gade). While in a bitter custody battle with her ex-husband (Dougray Scott), mother and daughter learn that their building is haunted by water. Director Walter Salles of "The Motorcycle Diaries" makes his Hollywood debut. (PG-13)

Women's work

Mother-daughter authors and artists Lucia Taralla Jensen and Natalie Jensen will be at Native Books/Na Mea Hawai'i, Ward Warehouse, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday to sign their book, "Na Kaimakamahine 'o Haumea, Daughters of Haumea: Women of Ancient Hawai'i."

The two will also talk about their photographs and research on Hawaii's ancient women.

Sounds of Polynesia

The 25-member Wallis Islands music and dance ensemble from Wallis and Futuna, in central Polynesia, will perform several concerts in Honolulu this week.

Joined by the band Nuku Alofa, which has toured extensively in Europe and the Pacific, the performers will appear:

Today: At Honolulu Hale's central courtyard, noon to 1 p.m., and at Aloha Tower Marketplace Atrium, 2 to 3 p.m. Free.
Tomorrow: At Bishop Museum's Hawaiian Hall, 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. (museum admission required), and the East-West Center Friendship Circle, outdoors between John A. Burns Hall and Hale Manoa, 4:30 to 6 p.m. Bring mats or back rests. Admission is free. Parking on campus is $3.
Saturday: At Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC admission required), 6 to 6:30 p.m.

'Art & Soul' at JCCH

TEMARI, the Center for Asian and Pacific Arts, will present its annual "Art & Soul" fund-raiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 16 at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii Manoa Grand Ballroom.

Dubbed "Nake'u's Cabaret," the event will feature food and drinks presented in cabaret style and a silent auction of ceramics, fabric, jewelry, prints and artwork. Included among the auction items donated by TEMARI's faculty and supporting artists is a plantation-era cedar storage chest on wheels.

The highlight will be "Nake'u's Challenge," in which 30 artists will create works inspired by the work of isle fashion designer Nake'u Awai. The finished creations will be auctioned on site.

Tickets are $35, of which $15 is tax-deductible. Call 536-4566.

Rotary scholarships

The Rotary Club of North Hawai'i is offering four $500 vocational education scholarships for the 2005-06 academic year. The deadline to apply is Monday.

The scholarships are open to Hawaii residents who have been accepted or are enrolled in a vocational program at a Hawaii educational institution. A letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, principal or mentor is required, as well as personal background, a description of the vocational field and program being pursued, and career goals.

Interviews will be held July 16, with winners notified July 17.

WCC seeks vendors

Applications are being accepted from artists, crafters and food vendors wishing to participate in the Windward Hoolaulea to be held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 24 at Windward Community College in Kaneohe.

The no-alcohol event is expected to draw 25,000 people for a day of entertainment, activities and games.

The entertainment will include Genoa Keawe, Raiatea Helm and Ho'okena.

Craft booth fee is $120. Call Linda Mullikin, 235-7422.

A food booth runs $450, with access to electricity and water. Call Sandy Okazaki, 235-7361.

Nonprofit groups that want to provide information to the public may also participate for a $25 donation. Call Gordon Miyamoto, 235-7747.
