Hank’s Cafe now offers
a feast for the eyes as well

INTERESTING PEOPLE: Hank Taufa'asau has a new art show up at Hank's Cafe Honolulu on Nuuanu Avenue. The series, "Hiki'i a pa'a," celebrates traditional Polynesian lashing and canoe-rigging techniques, and explores the concepts of hiki'i (to bind) and ho'opa'a (to make fast). The designs are also available on greeting cards that relate those ideas to personal relationships. Great "made in Hawaii" items for gift-giving ... Joe "J.D" Daniels of B.E.T. (Big Every Time) looks younger since cutting his hair. Daniels says the time was right after 10 years with long hair. B.E.T. rocked Nick's Fishmarket during Aziel's CD party last Friday. The crowd couldn't get enough when Daniels, Tim "Papa T" Troxell, and their musicians got into an extended arrangement of "Skalele" ...

RIGHT ON RON!: "Oldies 107.9" usually restricts its DJs to a limited play list of 1960s to early 1970s hits, but Ron Klohs (a k a The Real Ron O'Neil) gave serious "oldies" fans a thrill on Sunday by playing the full 17-minute, 5-second version of Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida." Although Klohs warned listeners not to expect to hear the song more than once a year, it would be a great boost to the format if the station also allowed him to bust out the full-length versions of "Time Has Come Today" and "Bang Bang" by the Chambers Brothers, "Blues Power" by Albert King, and "Crimson And Clover" by Tommy James & The Shondells. Is one long song a week too much to ask for? ...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: To Michael Lanakila Casupang and Joan Landry, who are celebrating today ... and to Natasha Mahealani Akau (Tuesday) ...

HAPPY ENDINGS: Kumu Hula Pohai Souza and Ab Valencia had to cancel a fund-raiser for Kaululehuaika'iu Inc., after someone stole 1,000 tickets. Island Princess, a macadamia- and-chocolate confection company, donated $1,000 of Macadamia Popcorn Crunch to help the halau raise money needed to produce its ho'ike in August. Call 593-0899 to support the halau ...

MORE CHEESE, PLEASE: Frank Feta has replaced Buddy Gouda on drums with Richard Cheese. Cheese and his band, Lounge Against the Machine, play tomorrow night at the Wave Waikiki ...
