Chun qualifies for U.S. Women's Amateur

Mari Chun of Pearl City won a sudden-death playoff against Honolulu's Stephanie Kono yesterday to earn a berth in next month's USGA Women's Amateur Championship in Georgia.

Chun and Kono both carded rounds of 1-over-par 72 in yesterday's local qualifying tournament at Oahu Country Club. Chun claimed the qualifying spot by winning the fourth playoff hole. Kono will be the first alternate. Kauai's Mariko Shimozaki is the second alternate after finishing at 2-over 73.

The U.S. Women's Amateur is Aug. 1-7 at Ansley Golf Club in Atlanta.

» Hilo's Jacob Low fired a 6-under-par 66 yesterday to qualify for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.

Low finished with a two-round total of 8-under 136 to lead the 25-player field at the Waikoloa Village Golf Club on the Big Island. He carded six birdies and 12 pars in yesterday's round to pass first-round leaders Tadd Fujikawa and Sean Maekawa.

Fujikawa (138) is the first alternate and Maekawa (139) is the second alternate. The U.S. Junior Amateur is July 18-23 at Longmeadow Country Club in Massachusetts.

Hawaii Pacific completes hoops staff

New Hawaii Pacific University basketball coach Kelly Wells completed his coaching staff with the hiring of assistant coaches Kurt Young and Richie Riley.

Both worked as assistant coaches at Georgetown College in Kentucky the last two seasons.

Young, 33, has head coaching experience at Labette (Kan.) Community College and Thomas University in Georgia, where he went 40-22 in two seasons.

Riley, 22, was an All-State high school player in Kentucky and previously coached at Madison Central High.

Young and Riley join second-year assistant Jeff Harada on the Sea Warriors coaching staff. Wells was promoted to head coach when J.D. Barnett resigned in May.

» At Provo, Utah, Walter Roese, a Brigham Young-Hawaii graduate, was promoted to assistant coach by new BYU coach Dave Rose.

Roese was previously BYU's director of basketball operations and joins assistant John Wardenburg and Dave Rice on Rose's staff. Rose was promoted after Steve Cleveland resigned to take over Fresno State.

Speed and quickness clinic ongoing

The Big Red speed, agility, and quickness clinic is ongoing and continues through the end of July.

The clinic is free for men and women of all ages and is held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at Laie Park. For more information, call Byron at 216-2637.

Big Island club to hold golf tournament

Makalei Golf Club will host the first Aloha Friday Invitational golf tournament July 29 in Kailua-Kona.
