Isle ‘diamond’ shines
on city's centennial

What represents Honolulu to the world? Designer Clarence Lee had no doubts.

"Diamond Head," he declared, unveiling his design for the city's centennial celebration logo. "It's the icon of our city, our Eiffel Tower, our San Francisco Bay Bridge. After I decided that, it came very quickly."

The logo, created by Lee in only two weeks, was unveiled yesterday at the Honolulu Hale courtyard just two days before the city begins observing its 100th birthday.

"It puts a face on the whole celebration," said Councilman Donovan Dela Cruz, also a member of the "Honolulu 100" advisory committee. The committee needed something to put on letterheads and envelopes because "we only get to do this every hundred years," he said. "No one does this better than Clarence Lee."

At the unveiling, Lee was also awarded a plaque for donating his services. Mayor Mufi Hannemann thanked Lee for "coming through with the beautiful logo, to be made available on caps and T-shirts for purchase. Honolulu has world-class artists and designers."

The first official event for the centennial celebration is "Ha'aheo no 'o Honolulu," a free concert Friday at the Honolulu Shell, sponsored by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and MidWeek. Honolulu 100 board vice chairwoman Linda Wong said only 125 seats remained out of 8,000.

The day after the kickoff event, the city's Web site publicizing centennial events goes online at www.honolulupride.com.

The organization is also seeking nominations of 100 people significant in Honolulu history during the last century. Entry forms and other information are available at the Mayor's Office on Culture and the Arts at 523-4674 or via e-mail at 100@honolulupride.com. Deadline is July 8.
