Rosa tops Irons in fourth round at St. Leu

Three-time reigning world champion Andy Irons of Kauai got through the third round of the Rip Curl Search WCT surf contest yesterday on Reunion Island with a victory over Jean Da Silva, but was eliminated in a fourth-round loss to Peterson Rosa.

Fellow Hawaii surfers Fred Patacchia Jr. and Bruce Irons were eliminated yesterday in the third round.

White signs extension with Dragons

Farrington graduate Josh "Zeus" White has signed a two-year contract extension with the Arena Football League's New York Dragons, the team announced yesterday.

White played two seasons with the Hawaiian Islanders of af2 before earning a spot with the Dragons as a fullback/linebacker in 2004. He rushed for 180 yards and ranked fourth in the AFL with 12 rushing touchdowns last season. He also recorded 32 tackles and one interception on defense for the Dragons, who went 10-7.

Mahelona on Nagurski watch list

Tennessee defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona is one of 50 players on the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list.

The trophy is given annually in December to the best defensive player in college football.

Mahelona was a standout for Kealakehe High School on the Big Island and graduated in 2001.

Two Western Athletic Conference players were named to the watch list -- Boise State linebacker Korey Hall and San Jose State defensive back Josh Powell.

Team Hawaii earns Hamilton Island Cup victory

Team Hawaii beat out 17 other open men's crews, including runner-up Lanikai, to win the prestigious Hamilton Island Cup 42-kilometer marathon outrigger canoe race yesterday around Hamilton Island, Australia.

Team Hawaii was timed in 3 hours, 6 minutes and 53 seconds in the event that uses a crew of nine with open water relief paddler changes.

Lanikai, which holds the course record, finished in 3:10:38.

The Team Hawaii senior men's crew placed second behind Mooloolaba, finishing in 3:33:57. The Australians won in 3:30:27.

Team Anuenue of Oahu placed third in the golden masters division in 4:13:14.

UH coaches capture Big Island golf event

Three University of Hawaii assistant football coaches teamed up to win the Dolphin Days Golf Tournament at the Waikoloa Beach and Golf Resort.

Mouse Davis, Rich Miano and Wes Suan won with a net score of 57. They beat the second-place team of Mark Wang, Ethan Wang, John Hollkamp and Barbara Hollkamp by one stroke.

Other UH assistants took part, including Mel deLaura, Cal Lee, Dan Morrison, George Lumpkin and Ron Lee. Oakland Raiders tackle Robert Gallery also participated.

The event was a fund-raiser for the Shriners Hospital for Children and the Pacific Marine Life Foundation.

» The last Hawaii qualifier for the ESPN National Golf Challenge is tomorrow at Mililani Golf Club.

The qualifier is being presented by radio station KKEA and Territorial Savings Bank.

The tournament, which is a fund-raiser for the V-Foundation for cancer research, is a two-person better-ball event with gross and net divisions. The entry fee is $95 and tee times begin at 11:45 a.m.

Island Movers take 2 of 3 in Japan

The Hawaii Island Movers won two of three games last weekend on their baseball road trip to Japan.

The Movers defeated Hiroshima 5-3 on Saturday and 10-3 on Sunday, and they also lost to Shikoku 10-3.

Chester Wilson and Kip Masuda homered in Saturday's win over Hiroshima, and Wilson doubled in Sunday's loss to Shikoku.

Mike Gehringer went 3-for-4 with a homer to lead the Movers in Sunday's victory over Hiroshima.
