Immortal friends

ALTHOUGH artists may suffer creative draughts from time to time, wreaking havoc on their work and peace of mind, there's always a soft place for them to fall if they've got a Buster or Fifi waiting at home. Ever the emotional refuge, Buster lives for face licks and a warm, fuzzy nuzzle, no matter that the rest of the world sneers. One need not top the Mona Lisa to keep the love coming.

Whoever took this common knowledge and turned it into an art show is one smart cookie. After all, put an artist -- or anyone, for that matter -- into a warm, comfy mental space, and the creative juices will flow. No one's been known to make word associations between "Fifi" and "artistic block."

Thus, "Pet Project Group Show, Mixed Media," on exhibit at Hawaii Pacific University Art Gallery through July 22, is an engaging, often warm display of the inspiration pets provide their owners. Paul Hosch paints a humorous depiction of his cat's fantasy lifestyle in "Steinway's Fantasy." "Gussie, Future Heartbreaker" by Ingrid Manzione is a touching work that mixes the painting of a puppy with a literal journal documenting the grief of losing an elderly pet.

Brad Capello creates a mixed media shrine to his pets. The ostentatious design symbolizes the reverential place beloved animals hold in our lives. Anyone with their own Buster will immediately understand the emotional place Capello worked from in creating the piece.

Other artists in the show include Dorothy Faison, Jinja Kim, Jodi Endicott, Andy Kay, David Behlke, Fred Roster, John Koga, Kimberly Chai, Bernie Moriaz, Rochelle Lum, Roy Venters, Paul Levitt, Jackie Lau and Carl Jennings.

Hawaii Pacific University Art Gallery is located at 45-045 Kamehameha Highway in Kaneohe, in the lobby of the university's administration deparment. The gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays. Call 236-3500 for more information.
