Hawaii surfers advance at Reunion Island

Hawaii's Fred Patacchia and Andy Irons won their first-round heats in the Rip Curl Search WCT event at Reunion Island off the coast of South Africa.

Only half of the first-round heats were completed. The first-round winners earn automatic berths in the third round.

Patacchia posted a heat score of 15.23 to top Hawaii's Kalani Robb and three-time world champion Tom Curren.

Irons won his heat with Australia's Richard Lovett and Reunion Island's David Grainville with a score of 13.83.

Hawaii soccer teams eliminated at regional

The semifinal round of the U.S. Youth Soccer Region 4 Championships in Denver proved to be a blank for three Hawaii teams yesterday. All three were shut out.

The MSC Strikers from Mililani lost to the El Dorado Crew from Northern California 3-0 in the Under-14 boys division.

Real Copa Hawaii FC lost to the Irvine (Calif.) Strikers 1-0 in an Under-13 girls match, and Holokalapua lost by the same score to the Nevada Tabagators in an Under-14 girls contest.

The Under-13 Real girls team received the tournament's fair-play award in its division.

Hayashi 9 back in club pro championship

Hilo's Kevin Hayashi shot a 5-over-par 77 yesterday and is nine shots behind the leaders in the PGA Club Professional Championship in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Hayashi made the cut by one stroke with a 36-hole total of 9-over 153. He enters the third round tied for 85th place. Travis Long and Alan Morin lead the tournament at 144.

Hershey track meet today at Kaiser

Close to 300 boys and girls are expected to compete in the 22nd annual Hershey Youth Track and Field Program State Finals today at Kaiser High School.

The top finishers in the meet will be eligible for selection to the Pacific Southwest Regional Team and a trip to the national meet in Hershey Pa., in August. Today's meet starts at 7:45 a.m.
