Hayashi 8 back in club pro championship

Hilo's Kevin Hayashi shot a 4-over 76 and is eight shots in back of the leaders after the first round of the PGA Club Professional Championship yesterday in Kiawah Island, S.C.

He's currently tied for 77th place after a round that included two birdies, 11 pars, four bogeys and a double bogey.

7 Wahine named MPSF All-Academic

Seven members of the Hawaii women's water polo team were named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic Water Polo Team yesterday.

Selected were seniors Tracy Anderson (4.0, elementary education), Audrey Harrer (3.01, animal science), Danielle Mulford (3.47, religion), Colleen Shiman (3.62, political science/history) and Malia Tarayao (3.3, psychology), junior Shannon Carroll (3.25, interdisciplinary studies) and sophomore Brittany Dames (3.02, physics).

Only Stanford, with eight players chosen, had more than UH among the league's 13 schools.

Hawaii soccer teams advance at regionals

Three Hawaii soccer teams advanced to the semifinal round of the U.S. Youth Soccer Region 4 Championships in Denver yesterday.

The Real Hawaii FC Under-13 girls defeated Alaska 9-0 and will play the Irvine (Calif.) Strikers today.

Hookalapua beat Sereno (Ariz.) 1-0 in an Under-14 girls match. The Honolulu team plays the Nevada Tabagators today.

The MSC Strikers from Mililani topped Arizona 4-2 in an Under-14 boys match. They play the El Dorado Crew from Northern California today.

Hawaii sent 15 state age-division winners and two wild-card teams to Denver and 10 made it to the quarterfinal round.
