Grants available
to help women, kids

The Hawaii Women's Legal Foundation is accepting applications for its 2005 grant requests from organizations and projects that help to improve the legal status and welfare of women and children in Hawaii.

The charitable organization has made grants to the following organizations in the past year:

» Child and Family Service Domestic Abuse Shelter, to help purchase safe outdoor playground equipment and make lawn improvements at its Leeward shelter.
» Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline, to help fund acquisition and relocation costs of a new permanent office space.
» Hawaii Literacy for its English as a Second Language Family Literacy Program, which provides classes for women and children to teach life skills, such as communicating with a child's teacher or completing a job application.
» Waianae Coast Christian Women's Job Corps, to set up a core skills nursing assistant lab.
» YWCA of Oahu, to support "Home Base," an economic advancement program for women in transition at Fernhurst Residence which provides affordable transitional shelter, financial counseling and practical life-planning skills.
» Waikiki Health Center, to add a new position of medical assistant at the center's Care-A-Van Homeless Drop-in clinic to enable the facility to see more homeless people in need of medical care and to begin providing women's health services, such as pelvic and breast exams, Pap smears and contraceptive care.

Deadline for applications is Tuesday.
