Hawaii's Michelle Wie signed autographs for fans yesterday as she walked to the first tees during the first day of practice for the U.S. Women's Open at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver. The tournament starts Thursday.



Condry drops Okino in HSWGA match play

Hee Sue Condry, Kuulei Kaae Tiffany Ishihara-Paraso and Sanae Vierra advanced out of the first round of the Hawaii State Women's Amateur Match Play Championship at Oahu Country Club yesterday.

Each of the winners have to play seeded players today, with Cyd Okino taking on Condry, Kaae facing Kayla Morinaga, Paraso playing Bobbie Kokx and Vierra meeting Jandee Kim.

Okino is the top seed in the tournament, with Kokx drawing the No. 2 spot.

The quarterfinals begin today at 7 a.m. with the semifinals following at noon. The championship is scheduled for tomorrow at 8 a.m.

Golf tournaments raise $1 million

Friends of Hawaii Charities will contribute $1 million to the local community after successful fund-raising through Hawaii's golf season.

Most of the record amount was raised during the PGA's, LPGA's and Champions Tour's event held in the state in January.

Friends of Hawaii Charities was formed in 1998 and has raised more then $5 million.
