U.S. Senate panel OKs funds for Lanai

A Senate subcommittee yesterday approved $13 million to repair Lanai's only harbor by October, Sen. Daniel Inouye said.

The Kaumalapau harbor's rubble-mound breakwater, which protects ships from rough seas and surge conditions, has eroded to half its original 400-foot length over the past 25 years.

Contractors worried about deteriorating safety had threatened to halt their delivery of goods and services to Lanai, he said.

The project's completion date will be moved forward to October from next May, Inouye said, after the Senate Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee approved a bill including the provision.

The full Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to vote on the measure tomorrow.

Mapunapuna crash leaves man in critical condition

A 67-year-old Honolulu man is in critical condition after crashing into a rock garden in Mapunapuna yesterday.

Police said the man might have suffered a heart attack at the time of the collision.

The man was driving into the parking lot at 2850 Pukuloa St. when his black 2000 four-door Honda Accord struck a rock garden, part of the landscaping that borders the parking lot, according to police.

He was taken to Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center in critical condition.

Police arrested a 28-year-old man Monday in connection with the killing of another man last weekend.

The victim, 60, was found injured in Kamehameha Heights at about 3:17 a.m. Saturday. He died Sunday.

Police initially classified the case as an unattended death, but an autopsy later revealed his injuries were the result of an assault.

Police identified a suspect in the case and arrested him in Pearl City for investigation of second-degree murder.

Police chase down alleged drug dealer

Police arrested a 21-year-old Hilo man for allegedly having an estimated $5,000 worth of crystal methamphetamine, or "ice," last week.

Police charged Matthew Hoshide-Andrade with first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, illegal possession of drug paraphernalia and multiple traffic offenses. He was released after posting $15,000 bail.

Acting on a tip about possible ice sales, officers staked out a parking lot at the University of Hawaii-Hilo and witnessed Hoshide-Andrade meeting with another male, police said.

As officers approached Hoshide-Andrade, he fled in his vehicle along Kinoole Street.

Police said they followed Hoshide-Andrade from a safe distance and saw him apparently lose control of his vehicle on Lanihuli Street and come to a stop on a private lawn. Police said he then got out of his vehicle and threw a bag into the bushes.

Police said he then got back into his vehicle and attempted to drive off, but was unable to go far because of a flat tire. Witnesses directed officers to a service station, where the suspect was arrested.

Officers recovered 57.2 grams of ice with an estimated street value of more than $5,000 from the bag the suspect threw into the bushes, police said. They also seized $1,020 in cash.

Police are consulting with the U.S. Attorney's Office for possible federal charges.
