» Suzanne P. Murphy, with the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, has been appointed to the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences.

Murphy, director of Nutrition Support Shared Resource at the Cancer Research Center, will serve on the national board until June 2008.

The board makes judgments on food intake, nu- trition and health relationships.

She also served on Food and Nutrition Board committees to set nutrient intake standards for the United States and Canada, and chaired a committee on applying the standards.

Dr. Carl-Wilhelm Vogel, director of the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, said Murphy "has already shown much leadership on Food and Nutrition Board committees. Her appointment brings additional national recognition to the Cancer Research Center."

Murphy has been a researcher and professor in the Cancer Research Center's Epidemiology Program since 1999, working on the relationship of diet and cancer and possible dietary reasons for different cancer rates among Hawaii's ethnic groups. Pearl Harbor destroyer rescues stranded man

A Pearl Harbor-based guided-missile destroyer helped rescue a lone sailor from his disabled sailboat Saturday 800 nautical miles off the coast of San Diego.

William Peterson, 56, was sailing from Panama to San Francisco when the mast on his 40-foot sailboat broke.

After receiving the distress signal from Peterson's boat, the Coast Guard launched a C-130 from Sacramento, Calif., and the USS Chung-Hoon was diverted from operations nearby to assist in the search. The C-130 crew located the sailboat and remained overhead until the Chung-Hoon arrived and used a small, rigid-hull inflatable to rescue Peterson.

Staff aboard the Chung-Hoon, who said Peterson was in good condition, used a helicopter yesterday to transport him to a Coast Guard base in San Diego.

Stings not from box jellyfish, specialist says

There seems to be a large quantity of tiny jellyfish in Keehi Lagoon, the curator of the Waikiki Aquarium said yesterday after examining water samples from the water body.

But Jerry Crow, a shark and jellyfish specialist, said he believes the animals are not box jellyfish, as suggested Saturday by a UH researcher, but another type, called hydromedusae jellyfish.

The hydromedusae could easily be mistaken for a box jellyfish, Crow said.

This jellyfish sometimes "blooms" in mainland locations, with large populations lasting through spring and summer, then dying in cooler weather, Crow said. It is unknown how long a bloom might last here, he said, although individual jellyfish are estimated to live about four months.

The ones in Keehi Lagoon are tiny, no bigger than the head of a pin.

Hui Wa'a canoe racing association canceled its regatta Sunday at Keehi because paddlers using the lagoon were being bitten or stung by something in the water there at May 29 and June 5 regattas.

Police said the suspect then climbed to the second-floor lanai of another unit and confronted three men inside the apartment and again acted like he had a gun. This time, police said, he took cell phones and cash.

The suspect then entered a third unit through an unlocked door where he confronted another man and took his car keys, police said. The victim chased the suspect, who then threw down the car keys and fled on foot.
