OUR PICKS THIS WEEKEND

Nadine sez...

You can "have it your way" at certain burger joints, but most of the time, fast-fooders don't have the luxury of customization. "For your few measly bucks, you're having it OUR way, thank you very much!"

Where plate lunches are concerned, you're lucky to have a tossed salad option to the usual rice-mac salad combo.

Not so at Pu'uwainani's, the lunch wagon at the corner of Halekauwila and South streets, within striking distance of Circuit Court. In addition to the reasonable price of $3.75 ($4.25 if it's garlic ahi with sweet wasabi sauce) for a miniplate of pork adobo, pork guisantes, mushroom chicken, or garlic mahimahi with stir-fry veggies, you have choices of white or brown rice, and tossed salad or kim chee. The garlic chicken mini is shown above.

Regular plates are priced from $4.75 to $6.75.

When I worked in downtown on South Street during my lunch hour I often went to Kakaako Waterfront Park. A short board stuffed in my car and surf shorts under my pants, I could be in the water at the gentle Flies surf break within 10 minutes. Thirty minutes of surfing always made the rest of the work day go smoother. There's a shower at the shoreline sidewalk and steps into a protected area of ocean for an easy paddle out. Lucky we work downtown.

The annual Pan-Pacific Festival always has a lot to see over its three-day schedule. This is the perfect weekend to play tourist in Waikiki. Make use of the kamaaina discounts at the Waikiki hotels and grab a room so you'll be right in the center of all the attractions.

With relatives in from Kauai for the weekend, we'll probably be shopping out at Waikele and visiting with ALL the relatives. But, hopefully I'll be able to check out the Vietnam performances at the Mission Memorial Auditorium near Honolulu Hale Saturday.
