UH ends Day 1 of title defense in first place

National champion Hawaii ended day one of its title defense in first place yesterday at the ICSA Coed Dinghy Championships at Lake Travis in Austin, Texas.

Hobart/William Smith, Dartmouth, Yale and Harvard ended the first day of competition in second through fifth place.

"It was our kind of competition today with some really good winds," UH sailing coach Andy Johnson said. "There's a lot of regatta left, though."

UH All-Americans Bryan Lake and Jennifer Warnock scored the day's low total of 25 points in the "A" division, including a first-place finish in their final race of the day.

Hawaii's "A" and "B" total of 66 points leads Team Race champion Hobart/William Smith by six points. Action continues today through tomorrow with 24 races left.

Arnoult-Ritthaler wins wheelchair tennis title

Maui's Beth Arnoult-Ritthaler upset top-seeded Sharon Walraven of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-4, Saturday to win the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour's Atlanta Open.

It was the second title this season for Arnoult-Ritthaler, the tournament's fourth seed. It was also her first win over Walraven, who is ranked No. 2 in the world.

UH's Spiers baseball freshman All-American

Hawaii shortstop Joe Spiers was named to the 2005 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team by Collegiate Baseball.

The second-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection hit .307 in his first year with the Rainbows. He had 11 doubles, three triples and stole 31 bases while scoring 45 times.

6 schools to host NFL junior football camps

The National Football League and six local high schools will conduct free full-pads, limited contact, week-long Junior Player Development football camps this summer for students ages 12-14.

There is no weight limit, but a medical waiver, current physical and birth certificate are required. Participants will receive a free NFL practice jersey, NFL football and NFL bag.

Camps are scheduled at Moanalua High School (the week of June 13), Castle (June 20), Campbell (June 27), Waipahu (July 4), Waialua (July 18) and Aiea (July 25).

Free youth clinic Saturday at Nanakuli: Al Beaver and his Nanakuli High School coaching staff and the Maili Hawaiian Warriors Youth Football Club will conduct a free clinic Saturday for children ages 6-13.

The clinic runs from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the Nanakuli High School field. Participants should wear athletic shoes and shorts and bring a doctor's medical slip.

Inline hockey regionals begin

Seventeen teams in five age groups will vie for the chance to represent Hawaii this summer starting tomorrow at the USA Hockey Inline Regional Tournament at Kaomaaiku Park (10 Acres) in Mililani.

Round-robin play begins with tomorrow's 1 p.m. contest in the 10-under division between the Cane Spiders from Maui and Go Bananas of Oahu. Competition runs from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday with championships on Sunday for 8-under at 9 a.m., 10-under at 9:45 a.m., 14-under at 10:30 a.m., 12-under at 11:15 a.m. and 17-under at noon.

The winners qualify to compete at the USAHIL national tournament, July 30-Aug. 6, in Voorheers, N.J. Last year, Da Kine of Oahu won the Pee Wee title.

Admission is free.

Power lifting meet Saturday

Hawaii's top lifters will compete in Saturday's World Association of Bench Press and Dead Lifters power lifting meet at the Waikiki Marriott Beach Resort.

Competition begins at 8:30 a.m.
