A $2.2 billion man
will speak this month
at UH business lecture

Billionaire Samuel Zell is coming to town and nobody has to pay to hear him speak.

The 63-year-old chairman of Equity Group Investments LLC is described as a self-made tycoon and the country's largest landlord.

With an estimated net worth of $2.2 billion, he ranks at No. 292 on the 2005 Forbes list of the world's richest people.

Zell's lecture, part of the University of Hawaii College of Business "Kipapa i ke Ala" series, will be held June 23 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The school is inviting luminaries from international business to talk at the speech, which will be held at the School of Architecture Auditorium.

The Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship and E-Business at the University of Hawaii is accepting reservations for limited seating at 956-5083.

All-you-can-eat expansion

The original location of Makino Chaya Izakaya Buffet on King Street still has lunch and dinner lines out the door. It expanded to Mililani last year, taking over the space formerly occupied by Sizzler.

The all-you-can-eat Japanese restaurant now has won approval for a liquor license at site of the old Eastern Garden-Pearlridge. Makino Chaya Aiea Inc. was registered as a business with the state in January.

Cover girls

The second issue of locally produced Smart magazine is now on sale at stores from ABC to KTA to 7-Eleven.

The April 1 inaugural issue was given away free, but subsequent issues, including the new one featuring cover-girl-retail-sisters Shyrah Maurer and Brooke Israel, will cost $3.50.

Mayor names team

Mayor Mufi Hannemann has named local bank executives Garrett Grace, Richard Keene, Cathy Luke, Mark Taylor and Kevin Haseyama to his economic development advisory team.
