Golf retailer Bobby
Jones will tee off at
Ala Moana in 2 weeks

Golf apparel and accouterment retailer Bobby Jones is to open at Ala Moana Center June 15. Your nongolfing columnist had to wonder if the name of the shop is a youth-targeted branding and merchandising ploy by the folks at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

Nope.

The store, located on the mall level between designer boutiques Celine and Bulgari, will offer high-end golf gear including men's and women's clothing. Bobby Jones' e-commerce site, www.bobbyjonesshop.com, offers men's golf shirts at $165 and a $500 driver.

Bobby Jones and Robert Trent Jones were born with the same initials but were two distinctly different men whose lives revolved around golf.

Robert Tyre Jones Jr. won the U.S Open, British Open and Amateur Championships in 1930, which, according to the retailer's Web site, is a feat no one else has accomplished.

Robert Trent Jones Sr. was a golf course architect who designed hundreds of golf courses around the world, including Atlanta's Peachtree Golf Club, in collaboration with Grand Slam winner Bobby Jones after World War II. Robert Trent Jones started using his first, middle and last name shortly thereafter, with the intention of avoiding confusion.

The Ala Moana location will be Bobby Jones store No. 5 -- the others are in New York City, Beverly Hills, Atlanta and Las Vegas.
