Digital sans dizziness

Does technology leave you dizzy? Take a break. Grab some lunch. Come in peace to the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Outreach College/Pacific New Media presentation of a brownbag lunchtime series on "The Blog, Pod and Personal Internet."

"Living Digital 2.0" runs noon to 1 p.m. the first Thursday monthly through Sept. 1 in Krauss Hall 012. Topics are:

June 2: The direction of "Online News." Where is online news and blogging going? Will the New York Times be made irrelevant by Google, Yahoo and eBay?

July 7: "Best of the Podcast-o-sphere" tells where to find the best free audio available.

Aug. 4: "Podcasting Teach-In" with the Hawai'i Association of Podcasters, who show how to record, edit and post your own podcast.

Sept. 1: "Personal Internet" discusses what would it be like if you could find what you need even more efficiently, perhaps even before you ask for it. Find out what's coming.

Elder workshops set

The University of Hawaii at Manoa is offering a series of noncredit workshops geared toward our aging community.

"Elder Life: Tools for the Journey" will feature four sessions running 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays in June in Krauss 012. Each workshop is $35. Topics are:

June 4: "Creative Aging for a Creative Generation" asks what kind of life do you want to lead at 70 and beyond?

June 11: Jim Pietsch addresses "Elder Law," including basic estate planning and planning for incapacity.

June 18: Doug Wilson discusses "Putting Your Financial House in Order," with details on long-term care insurance, reverse mortgages and trusts.

June 25: "Facing Death, Surviving Loss" offers insight on common fears and myths about death, plus grieving, making funeral plans and saying goodbye. George Osakoda, a social worker for 34 years, has offered counseling on this subject for 10 years.

Don't be crabby

Dixie Grill's annual Crabfest runs through June, featuring Southern-style dishes that showcase the shellfish.

Among special menu items are Nana's Crab-Stuffed Shrimp, Dungeness Crab Cobb Salad, Soft-Shell Crab Po' Boy and a Blue and Snow Crab Salad. For those who prefer their crab straight up, there are platters of Alaskan king and Dungeness crab and the Trash Can O'Crabs.

Weekly specials: All-you-can-eat-in-an-hour Dungeness, 3 to 6 p.m. Mondays; Cornmeal-Crusted Soft Shell Crab, Wednesdays; Beer-Battered Crab Cakes, Thursdays; Soft-Shell Crab Etoufee, Fridays; steak and crab, Saturdays; and Crab-Stuffed Na'wlins BBQ Salmon, Sundays.

Sample wines from Down Under in tastings on Tuesday:

Waikiki Parc Hotel: Tasting includes appetizers by chef Michelle Baldomero -- Seared Beef with Kiwi-Lime Vinaigrette, Braised Lamb Over Curried Rice Cakes, Duck Spring Rolls, ceviche and Fondue Cheese in Puff Pastry. Tasting runs from 6 to 7 p.m. Cost is $18, Call 931-6643.

Indigo Eurasian Bistro: The Wrath of Grapes weekly wine club features wines from the Barossa Valley. Wines to be sampled: Peter Lehmann semillon, chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and "Clancy's" red blend; Grant Burge shiraz and "Holy Trinity" blend; and Two Hands "Brave Faces." Tasting begins at 6 p.m. Cost is $20, which includes light pupus. Call 521-2900.

The Kaanapali Golf Course on Maui is offering a shortened game of golf, paired with some leisurely follow-up munching, through its new "Wine & Nine" package.

The price of $135 covers two golfers playing nine holes, plus a keepsake backpack, choice of wine by Arnold Palmer or Leaping Horse, cheese and utensils.
