New releases by Hawaii authors

"Growing Native Hawaiian Plants -- A How-To Guide for the Gardener" By Heidi Leianuenue Bornhorst, Bess Press, $14.95

You wouldn't think that growing Hawaiian plants in Hawaii would require any special skills, but the native species are more delicate in comparison with invasive plants. Bornhorst's guide is not only complete and well-illustrated, it links the Hawaiian plants with native Hawaiian culture.

"Haleakala National Park" By Kirsten Whatley, Bess Press, $4.95
"Pearl Harbor Insider Guide" Dan Martin, Bess Press, $4.95
A couple more of the stoutly printed and folded instant guides -- sized to fit in your back pocket -- and priced at a gimme-gimme level. The Haleakala guide is the more modest, with an emphasis on science and scenery, while the Pearl Harbor guide skips the basic history and takes you right into the current visitor attractions -- which are historical in nature.

"Sister Surfer -- A Woman's Guide to Surfing With Bliss and Courage" By Mary Osborne and Kia Afcari, Lyons Press, $19.95
When it rains, it pours. This is the second "female" guidebook to surfing we've received this month. It's busy, pleasant and colorful.
