Metal morphosis

It's been two years since David Behlke, director of the Koa Gallery at Kapiolani Community College, was approached by metal artist Phyllis Murakami-Siu about putting together a group metalworks show. Behlke had immediately been interested in the project, and the college's review committee gave its nod right away. But the months and years slipped by before the show finally got off the ground.

"Metalmorphosis" is worth the wait. The jewelry and sculpture exhibit features works by Carole Bowen, Brenda May Ching, Nancy Montgomery, Murakami-Siu, Frances Pickens, Carol Sakihara, Donna Shimazu and Cynthia Wiig.

Murakami-Siu takes a humorous approach in her creation of an "earring" with her "Elephant Ear" sculptures. Sakihara's unique "garden" paves a literal path in the gallery, while Montgomery's whimsical jewelry displays an alluring mix of metals. Visitors will come away from "Metalmorphosis" awed by the amazingly intricate, detailed work and boundless creativity.

"Metalmorphosis" runs through June 25 at Koa Gallery on the Kapiolani Community College campus. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Note: The gallery will be closed June 10 for Kamehameha Day. Call 734-9374 for more information.
