Irons and Patacchia move on in Fiji event

Hawaii surfers Andy Irons and Fred Patacchia won their first-round heats yesterday at the inaugural Globe WCT Fiji pro surfing meet.

Irons and Patacchia won byes through the second round with their wins in 4- to 6-foot waves.

Kalani Robb, Sunny Garcia and Bruce Irons will have to wait for their second-round opportunities, as the meet was postponed for today.

Patacchia turned in one of yesterday's best scores, posting 16.60.

Fred Patacchia of Haleiwa finished first in his heat yesterday to advance to the third round of the Globe WCT Fiji.



Wahine advance at NCAA track regional

Hawaii sophomores Kelly Young and Dana Buchanan and senior Tasha Monroe advanced to today's finals of the NCAA West Regional track and field meet today at Eugene, Ore.

Young qualified for the 800 meters by running 2 minutes, 6.9 seconds in the trials yesterday. Monroe made it to the final eight of the 400 meters with a 56.25 effort, and Buchanan ran her 1,500 meters heat in 4:29.53 to qualify.

Sophomore Patricia Gauthier failed to qualify in the pole vault, despite tying her own school record of 12 feet, 6 inches.

Junior discus thrower Novelle Murray competes today. She did not have trials yesterday.

The top five finishers in the regionals, plus at-large entries, advance to the NCAA Championships, June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif.
