Pampulov to coach Sea Warriors tennis teams

Hawaii Pacific alumnus Stefan Pampulov is the new head coach of the Sea Warriors men's and women's tennis teams.

He succeeds Henry Somerville, who retired after 10 seasons.

Pampulov, 29, played under Somerville from 1999 to 2003 and was an All-American in 2000. He led HPU to the NCAA Division II championship tournament that same year. He was also the No. 1 player in the country in 2002, leading the Sea Warriors to a second-place finish in NCAA II.

"I'm very excited to be chosen for this prestigious position, said Pampulov, a native of Austria. "I will do my best to represent HPU in the community, and at the same time hopefully achieve great results on the court."

Ballard, Kennelly advance in Roxy Jam UK

Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly won their third-round heats yesterday to move on to the quarterfinals of the Roxy Jam UK in Great Britain.

Ballard defeated Australia's Laurina McGrath, and Kennelly beat Aussie Serena Brooke in 2-3 foot waves.

Another Hawaii surfer, Megan Abubo, lost her third round heat to Australia's Rebecca Woods.

U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier at Waikoloa

Waikoloa Village Golf Course is hosting qualifying for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, June 29-30.

The entry deadline is June 1 and the fee is $20.

The U.S. Junior Amateur Championship is July 18-23 in Longmeadow, Mass.

McKinley to hold summer girls hoops league

McKinley High is hosting a summer girls basketball league June 7 through July 15. The league is open to incoming high school seniors and players ages 17 and under. Games will be held Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The entry fee is $350, and each team is guaranteed 10 games.
