Kunia Wal-Mart
evacuated over
airborne irritation

The Kunia Wal-Mart was evacuated yesterday afternoon after several people complained of burning eyes and respiratory problems.

About 21 employees and patrons were monitored by Emergency Medical Services personnel at the scene.

Four people were taken in stable condition to St. Francis-West Medical Center, and 17 others refused transport, an EMS supervisor said.

A fire hazardous materials team entered the store at 94-595 Kupuohi St. and found no detectable levels of any hazard, said fire Capt. Emmit Kane.

Kane said the problem originated in the pharmacy area of the store.

The store's assistant manager said he had no idea what could have caused the irritation, which is why the Fire Department was called.

People were allowed to re-enter the store around 3:30 p.m.
