Chu, Fujikawa triumph in Brown golf tourney

Alex Chu and Tadd Fujikawa teamed up to win the Francis Brown Four Ball golf tournament yesterday at Ala Wai Golf Course.

The lead changed hands several times in the 36-hole championship match before Chu and Fujikawa held on to defeat Reyn Tanaka and Ryan Perez 1-up.

Chu and Fujikawa went 2-up with a birdie on the 31st hole of the day, the par-5 13th. But Tanaka and Perez cut the lead to 1-up with a birdie at the par-4 16th before the teams parred the final two holes.

Layne Tanaka and Curt Edwards defeated Brian Pang and Alan Adachi 9 and 8 in the A Flight, and George Akeo and Clarence Takahashi beat Randall Wong and Darren Jay 7 and 6 in the B Flight.

USGA championship qualifiers coming up

The Hawaii State Golf Association is holding local qualifiers for various events this summer.

The qualifier for the U.S. Senior Open (July 28-31, Kettering, Ohio) is July 12 at Mauna Lani Resort.

The qualifier for the U.S. Amateur Championship (Aug. 22-28, Ardmore, Pa.) is July 26 at Honolulu Country Club.

The qualifier for the Mid-Amateur Championship (Sept. 1-15, Chattanooga, Tenn.) is Aug. 4 at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

The qualifier for the USGA Senior Amateur Championship (Sept. 17-22, Rocky Face, Ga.) is Aug. 16 at Oahu Country Club.

» Entries are being accepted for the 29th U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championships, July 11-16 at Swope Memorial Course in Kansas City, Mo. Deadline for entries is May 25.

The sectional qualifiers for Hawaii are at the Ala Wai Golf Course on June 4, the Wailua Golf Course on June 11 and the Kapalua Bay Course on June 18.

The entry fee is $30. For an application, call the USGA at (908) 234-2300.

» The Aloha Section PGA is accepting registration applications for the 2005 Aloha Section Westfield Junior PGA Championship on June 16-17.

The 12-and-under competition is at the Naniloa Country Club in Hilo, while the 13-17 age division is on the Fazio Course at the Turtle Bay Resort.

The boys and girls winners qualify for the Westfield Junior PGA Championship in Westfield Center, Ohio, July 13-16.

Entry forms are available by calling the Aloha Section PGA at 593-2230.

» The 49th Waialae Women's Invitational golf tournament is scheduled for July 18-19. The entry fee for the 36-hole stroke-play event is $185. For an application, go to www.hswga.org.
