OUR PICKS THIS WEEKEND

It's hot outside already so you can imagine what an oven this place will feel like in September. Any chance to cool off will be welcomed, and Joa Joa Cafe at Palama Market-Makaloa offers the mother of all shave ice.

This Korean-style creation makes the local version seem manini, and has more in common with halo halo.

There is a small version (above, $5), but for "The Works" ($9.90), owner Suzie Park starts with a 12-inch wide bowl into which goes the fine ice, condensed milk, a sprinkling of roasted grain powder, all circled with five kinds of diced fruit -- peaches, kiwi, papaya, pineapple and banana (maybe strawberries and watermelon in the coming months) -- then topped with azuki beans, cubes of fruit jelly, two scoops of vanilla ice cream, and finally, two maraschino cherries.

Invite three or four of your friends to dig in, but watch out for brain freeze.

I usually tend to run away from science fiction and/or fantasy movies, but the hoopla surrounding the newest "Star Wars" movie has finally gotten to me. Although I won't be buying a lightsaber any time soon, I think I will check out "Revenge of the Sith." But you won't see me camped out at the theater, no matter how cute the Wookie is.

I also want to check out the reggae band Midnite at the Pipeline Cafe Thursday night.

Looking for a bargain? Liliha Library is having their Friends of Liliha Library Booksale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. I'll be there trying to grab as many children's books as possible because they're going for 25 to 50 cents a piece.

Kawela Bay, the last undeveloped and most pristine bay on Oahu, is also one of the island's best kept secrets. It's a place of peace and serenity. Access is from the nearby Turtle Bay Resort. Park in the public lot to hike 1.5 miles south to the bay, either along an inland trail or the rocky coast. Pack a lunch, some drinks, even something to read, and enjoy the bay and its always placid, sand-bottom waters.
