Call for foster parents

There will be activities for the kids, resources for parents and information on becoming a foster or adoptive family during the Foster Parent Appreciation and Recruitment Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Bishop Museum.

Families are encouraged to enjoy a day at Bishop Museum while meeting foster families and members of the Foster Care Committee.

Admission is free and there will be $5 discounted admission to galleries. Call 454-2570.

Foster/adoptive parent training classes will also be held: 5:45 to 9 p.m. May 20, 23, 24 and 27 in Waipahu. Call for location. Training consists of six sessions and are for qualified families wanting to become general licensed foster/adoptive parents.

Sharing 'Traditions'

Hokule'a Capt. Bruce Blankenfeld will be at the Bishop Museum when its "Traditions of the Pacific" series continues from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow and 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Blankenfeld will share fishing stories from his voyages, with an emphasis on traditional fishing techniques used during the canoe's travels throughout the Pacific.

Archivist, educator and Bishop Museum Association Council member Carol Silva will also share a fishing tale related to a special item in the museum's cultural collections.

On Saturday, members of the Native Hawaiian cooperative, Hale Ku'ai, demonstrate Hawaiian fishnet-making and fishnet throwing techniques.

The museum is at 1525 Bernice St. There is a $5 fee for each session; free for museum members. Reservations are required. Call 847-8296.

Conch blowers needed

The Honolulu Centennial Celebration Commission needs 100 conch shell blowers for the kick-off of the City & County of Honolulu's yearlong Centennial event, "Ha'aheo No 'O Honolulu," meaning "Honolulu Pride."
