Records to fall
at Maui fest

This year's Maui Film Festival from June 15-19 will feature several high-profile tributes to actors Jake Gyllenhaal, William H. Macy, Mike Myers, and Luke, Owen and Andrew Wilson. Film submissions may reach a record 1,200 (up from last year's 1,035), while attendance is expected to top 22,500, another record, said executive director Barry Rivers.

Several notable films to be screened include the drama "A Good Woman," starring Helen Hunt, Scarlett Johansson and Tom Wilkinson; Don Roos' "Happy Endings;" the Sundance festival hit "Hustle & Flow" and the dramedy "The Wendell Baker Story," a Wilson brothers collaboration.

Featured documentaries include "Deep Blue," a history of oceans; "The Emperor's Journey," about penguins on Antarctica's dangerous ice floes; and "Grizzly Man," the harrowing and moving story of grizzly bear expert and activist Timothy Treadwell ...

The premiere of the three, 30-second Scion Toyota TV spots directed by University of Hawaii Academy for Creative Media student directors Gabe Hoeffken, Chrystal Jameson and Thomas Takemoto-Chock was held last night at the O Lounge. The commercials begin airing here Thursday ...

Anyone with a burning desire to work in the media and entertainment industry has a chance through Variety's Ultimate Hollywood Agenda Contest.
