Rainbow Wahine finish fourth in nation

USC dropped Hawaii 11-6 yesterday in the third-place game of NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship yesterday in Ann Arbor, Mich.

"USC has more depth than us, and mentally we might not have been as sharp after yesterday's loss to UCLA," Hawaii coach Michel Roy said. "I'm very proud of my ladies."

UCLA went on to win the national title, 3-2 yesterday over Stanford, after rallying to beat Hawaii 7-6 in a grueling match on Saturday night.

Lauren Wenger and Moriah Van Norman each scored two goals to lead the Trojans against the Wahine. Hawaii's Anna Sieprath scored three times, while Amy Logan added two goals.

"It was a tense and tough game," senior driver Darcy Scott-Hosaka said. "We were tired, but it was easy to pump ourselves up physically for our last game."

The Rainbow Wahine (21-11) finished their memorable season fourth in the nation.

"I'm very proud of where we are as a program," Roy said. "This is only the beginning."

Hawaii's Iefke Van Belkum made the all-tournament first-team and Monika Kruszona and goalie Meike De Nooy of the Rainbow Wahine made the second team.

Patacchia surfs into third round in Tahiti

Hawaii's Fred Patacchia won his second-round heat yesterday at the Billabong Pro Tahiti at Teahupoo.

Patacchia eliminated Shane Beschen 18.37 to 16.16 to join fellow Hawaii surfers Andy Irons, Bruce Irons and Kalani Robb in today's third round.

The Irons brothers and Robb skipped over the second round after winning first-round heats on Saturday.

Hawaii's Liam McNamara and Sunny Garcia were eliminated yesterday.
