OUR PICKS THIS WEEKEND

Short attention span eater

On my trip to New York, I threatened my laid-back significant other with the prospect of running all around town, checking out all the restaurants, boutiques, theaters, clubs and galleries. But the first thing I wanted to do was find an Indian restaurant with ice cream for dessert. There are some things you just can't get here.

Theirs is a dense ice cream made with evaporated milk and sugar and spiced with cardamom and cinnamon. It's sweet, it's fatty. What's not to like?

Well, I can cross that to-do off my list, since Maharani started serving it a couple of weeks ago. Co-owner Kabir Chowdhury said they started making it because customers craved it. He likes it, too, but he's an equal-opportunity ice cream fan, saying he likes the local flavors as well. The house offering comes in plain and mango.

» Place: 2509 S. King St.
» Hours: 5 to 10 p.m. daily
» Cost: About $30 for two; BYOB
» Call: 951-7447

Having to move into a new apartment this weekend means I probably won't have a lot of extra time to go out on Friday or Saturday.

Luckily, the guys from Architechs and Profound Entertainment are kicking off a new Tuesday night weekly at Spada Bar and Restaurant, located on the ground floor of the First Hawaiian Tower in downtown.

"Bada Bing!" gets started at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, with DJs Delve and XL on the decks. I'll be there, cruising outside with a drink in hand (and probably still complaining about having to move).

Head to BluWater Grill in Hawaii Kai from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday for a great brunch, silent auction, activities for the keiki, and music by Moanalua and Makana, all for a suggested donation of $25 ($10 for kids under age 12).

The event is a benefit organized by friends of Amy Bruhl, a Lanikai Elementary School teacher and mom of three who is fighting bone cancer which has already claimed her right leg. Funds raised will help pay her medical expenses, including a special prosthetic leg that will allow Bruhl to continue with her hobbies of soccer and canoe paddling, and return to the classroom this fall. It's a day of fun for the family and a chance to feel good about yourself for helping as well.
