Hawaii's academic progress rate increases

The University of Hawaii's academic progress rate increased by 13 points, according to a final report for the 2003-04 academic year released yesterday by the NCAA.

The report lists UH with 943 points, which ranks slightly lower than the average of all NCAA Division I-A programs (946).

In a preliminary report released in February, Hawaii's score was 930.

Four UH programs -- men's volleyball, women's golf, women's tennis and water polo, received perfect scores of 1,000. Men's basketball, which posted an 885 preliminary score, improved to 941.

Athletic teams with a two-year (2003-04 as well as 2004-05, when it's released) APR score below the 925 requirement will be penalized with scholarship reductions.

"The good news is that we have improved our overall score ... ," UH athletic director Herman Frazier said. "Although we do have some work to do in regards to improving the individual scores of a few programs, I feel good about where we are as a department."
