Sing Chow, Perreira earn PacWest's top honors

Hawaii-Hilo's Leo Sing Chow earned Pacific West Conference Player of the Year softball honors yesterday, and Vulcans coach Callen Perreira took the league's coach of the year award.

Sing Chow, a designated hitter and pitcher, batted .409 and had a 1.98 ERA for the conference champions.

She was among nine players from Hawaii colleges on the all-conference first team.

Four of the others are from Hawaii-Hilo -- pitcher Sarah Steele, catcher Natalie Fujimoto, infielder Lisa Jackson and outfielder Laura Kimborowicz -- and four are from Hawaii Pacific -- utility player Brandi Peiler, infielder Nicole Kalakau and outfielders Jamie Reyes and Kellie Nishikida.

Peiler is the conference's freshman of the year.

NCAA water polo matches live on the Internet

UCLA will broadcast some of the upcoming NCAA water polo championship tournament matches live to Internet listeners.

Hawaii's quarterfinal match against Loyola Marymount on Friday won't be on the Internet. But, if the Rainbow Warriors advance, their semifinal match Saturday can be heard at uclabruins.com.

The championship match, if UCLA makes it that far, is also scheduled to be broadcast on the Internet.

Metzger to appear on NBC show tomorrow

Olympian Stein Metzger, a former Punahou volleyball standout, will appear on an episode of NBC's "The Apprentice" tomorrow night.

Metzger and other Olympians are included in segments featuring Tana, one of two remaining contestants who is tasked with organizing an event to promote New York's candidacy for the 2012 Olympic Games.

2 Seasiders gain NCAA II West Region honors

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Junyoung Kim and Jakub Huza received NCAA II West Region honors yesterday.

Kim (who is 16-3 in singles and 17-5 in doubles) is the NCAA II West Region Player to Watch and Huza (21-0 in singles and 19-2 in doubles) is the region's rookie of the year.

The 20th-ranked Seasiders face unranked Kutztown (Pa.) today in the opening round of the NCAA II tournament at Altamonte Springs, Fla.

2 in-line hockey tournaments on tap

Two in-line hockey tournaments are coming up on Oahu.

The Oahu In-Line Hockey League is running its spring tournament May 15 and May 21-22 at Kamilioki Rink in Hawaii Kai.

The USA Hockey Regional Tournament is scheduled for June 10-12 at Kaomaaiku Park in Mililani. The winners in various age groups advance to the USA Hockey nationals in New Jersey, July 30 to Aug. 6.

UH swimming team hires massage therapist

The University of Hawaii hired Barry Bazan as the new swimming and diving team's massage therapist, according to coach Mike Anderson.

Bazan takes over the role from Sonja Weiser, who held the position the past four years.
