Chang preparing
without notes for big test

Tim Chang would gladly study his Arizona Cardinals playbook in preparation for this weekend's minicamp in Tempe.

The problem is he doesn't have one.

"They don't let you take the playbook home if you're not officially on the team," Chang said. "You can get a big fine."

Last week's minicamp that included the entire roster was more like an orientation for Chang, the record-setting quarterback from Hawaii who signed a two-year free-agent contract with Arizona.

The first real test is this week, with the other rookies and free agents.

"It's going to be different this time. It's not the whole team, and I'm the only quarterback," said Chang, who is home in Waipahu between camps. "I threw the ball pretty well (at the first minicamp two weeks ago), I just didn't take the plays, the routes. Now I'm going to get the routes."

He said the Cardinals' offensive schemes are "complicated," but Chang is confident he can learn them quickly.

"I spent my time trying to process everything I could mentally (at the first camp), and now I'll do it physically," he said.

Arizona's other quarterbacks are two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner, Josh McCown, John Navarre and Chris Lewis. Lewis is playing in NFL Europe.

"(Warner's) a great guy, I was excited to meet him," Chang said. "I think the rookie receivers were even more excited to be catching balls from him."

Chang said the minicamp schedule is demanding, with most work days lasting 12 hours.

"It was my first time to Arizona, but I didn't see much besides (the Cardinals' facility)," Chang said. "The people I did meet were great. It seems like people there really respect people from Hawaii, they like our aloha spirit. It feels like the right place for me.

He's over the disappointment of not being drafted. He's not entrenched enough to be allowed to keep a playbook, but he is on the roster, No. 7. Now he has to work from a perspective he's not used to after starting nearly his entire college career -- from the bottom of the depth chart.

"I'm just going to have to play my hardest and do my best," Chang said.
