Hawaii-Hilo headed to NCAA II regionals

Hawaii-Hilo is headed to Carson, Calif., to play in the NCAA II West Regional Championship softball tournament.

The fifth-seeded Vulcans (31-9) play fourth-seeded San Francisco State (36-18) in the opening game of the tournament Thursday.

"We've worked hard for it and are ready for it," UHH coach Callen Perreira said. "Our only concern is that we haven't played a game since April 23. But I think after a few innings, once we get going, we'll be fine."

Monroe earns WAC track and field honor

Hawaii's Tasha Monroe earned the Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors yesterday.

Monroe won the 400-meter run in 53.81 at the Occidental Invitational in California to break a school record and qualify for the NCAA regionals. She also won the 200-meter run in 24.06.

Earlier this season, Monroe qualified for regionals in the long jump.

Molokai Solo World Championships coming up

The Kona Brewing Company Molokai Solo World Championships, a 32-mile paddling race, is Sunday.

Solo canoe paddlers and surfski competitors cross the Kaiwi Channel from Molokai to Oahu, finishing at Koko Marina Center. Spectators can view the race at Kona Brewing Company.

USTA Hawai sectionals next month

The United States Tennis Association is running the 2005 Fairfield Resorts, Inc. Hawaii Open Sectionals, June 3-5, at the University of Hawaii Tennis Complex.

The winner of the men's singles event will have an opportunity to compete in two upcoming pro tournaments -- as a wild card into the main draw of the Honolulu Futures and as a wild card into the qualifier for the Hilton Waikoloa Futures.

The sectionals men's doubles winner receives a wild card into qualifiers for both Futures tournaments.

The sectionals event also includes women's singles and doubles draws.
