Rainbow Wahine split with Spartans

The University of Hawaii softball team ended the regular season on a high note with a rout of San Jose State 11-1 in the second game of yesterday's doubleheader at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The Spartans used a solo home run by Carlie Hill to take the first game, 3-2.

With the split, Hawaii finished the regular season with a 30-21 overall record, 11-5 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Spartans are 33-24, 7-7 in the WAC.

In game one, the 'Bows took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Freshman Kaulana Gould hit a bouncer past the Spartan first baseman to score senior Denise Dahlberg. A throwing error by San Jose State then allowed Gould to score following a double steal. But from there, Spartan ace Carol Forbes shut down the Rainbow Wahine, retiring 12 straight batters before allowing two more hits. Rainbow senior Shannon Tabion picked up the loss, giving up 10 hits and three earned runs.

In the second game, the 'Bows lit up Forbes for 12 hits and seven runs. Senior pitcher Melissa Coogan got her 16th win of the year, spacing five hits in five innings.

Denise Dahlberg and Tracie Uchima both went 3-for-4 for Hawaii, with Uchima hitting a two-RBI triple in the fourth inning. Noelle Izumi batted 1-for-3 with an RBI. The trio scored six of Hawaii's 11 runs.

The Rainbow Wahine are still in contention for an at-large berth into the NCAA tournament. The selections will be announced on May 15.

The men's team lost 5-1 and the women lost 5-0 to UCSD.
