Feel those Natural Vibrations

While Cinco de Mayo is the day to celebrate Mexican independence, this year it's also an occasion to celebrate the homecoming of Natural Vibrations.

OK, so this might not be the very first show they guys have done since returning from their "Rolling Up the West Coast" tour -- they were one of the opening bands for The Wailers last night at Andrews Amphitheatre. But tonight's concert at Pipeline Cafe has no opening act, which gives the band a lot more time to spend on stage with their fans.

Doors open at 9 p.m. for the 18-and-over crowd; tickets are $15 at the door, with a $3 discount if you're old enough to drink. Call 589-1999 ...

OVER AT thirtyninehotel, there's yet another reggae-themed party getting its start tonight.

After a couple of guest appearances at the downtown gallery / nightspot, DJ Zacharijah steps into a residency for "G'wan Good." This one is for those 21-and-over, and a $5 cover charge will be in effect.

Can't make it over there on a Thursday? Give the "Saturday Night Lounge" a try. It's free to get in, and this week features a new resident DJ joining Gelerah Khoie on the decks. An admitted "closet DJ," Kamehameha grad Princess X promises "an unprecedented departure from the dogmatic formalism surrounding the art of DJing" with an eclectic mix of old school and new school ...

THIS WEEKEND is the time to pay a visit to the swanky Lewers Lounge at the Halekulani Hotel.

Director of Beverage Arts Dale DeGroff returns for the lounge's official grand re-opening this weekend, and will tend bar from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday through Tuesday. While I'm sure the other bartenders are all talented individuals, you don't want to miss the chance to have DeGroff mix you a drink.

Also worth checking out is the first of three cocktail seminars that DeGroff will host from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. This month, he'll discuss the finer points of mixing martinis, followed by a seminar on rum tropicals on June 23 and tequila on July 19. Tuition for each is $40; call 931-5040 ...

SKATEBOARD fanatics will converge on Aala Skatepark this weekend, with an opportunity to visit New York and appear on MTV's "Total Request Live" up for grabs.

Local skaters will have the chance to show their stuff in front of old school legends Jay Adams and Shugo Kubo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. It's all part of the pre-release hype of "Lords of Dogtown," a new movie that follows a group of teens in the '70s as skateboarding grew in popularity. Honolulu is one stop on a 34-city tour called "The Lords of Dogtown Skatepark Jam" ...
